In my point of view Indian people don’t know much about movies,music,sports and arts compared to other countries. In our country when a girl or boy says that she or he wants to be a dancer or a model most of the people think that the girl who want to do it is some kind of bad girl. we live in a country where a person with zero talent get’s job in film industries or entertainment media because of influence or their family relatives work in film industries. Indian and Bollywood movies have its own acceptance across India and world has fan following in many countries .Indian actors are liked by many of their look, acting skills, songs, Dance, Music, etc.. Academy Awards are given primarily for films made in English language and Indian movies needs to compete in category which is non Hollywood movies. Which means competing with movies nominated from many other countries thereby dimming the chance of getting an Oscar. Indian movies does not get any Oscar yet but few Indians had received Oscar for their work in Indian based movies made by Hollywood production houses . These are strictly my own opinion. Indian movies follow concept of “heroes and heroines” and not actors/characters or acting. Logically dull, storytelling nil but focusing more on glamour factor and songs and item numbers.
Indian producers have money in mind, so the movie focuses more on entertainment factor – masala. Indian movies try to put in all the flavor in one movie ending in disaster. Dialogue delivery – more focus on the pitch of delivering then the dialogue itself.
Every other Indian movie has a love angle – boy meets girl or chasing girl – even two boys competing for a girl or vice versa. More so, nowadays sexual content is dumped in to movies for box office collections.
May be we are not sending our best movies to the Oscars thanks to possible back-pushing happening inside selection panel. My personal favorites – Rang de basanti, Gangs of wasseypur were not even considered by selection panel.
But, things are changing in Indian cinema, we may soon have a wonderful Indian movie winning the Golden statue.India makes about 1500 movies per annum, which is almost half of the total movies made around the world. But how many movies have won an Oscar. Everyone would jump up and say Slumdog Millionaire, but Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi and Gandhi which have resulted in Indians winning Oscars were conceptualised, produced and directed by Non-Indians. Everyone in India were flattered by these movies and everyone hoped that these movies would win The Best Picture award in the Oscar,Slumdog Millionaire won this prestigious award. And most celebrated as though this was kind of victory for Indian Movie Industry, but actually its a shame that non of these were completely Indian Movies.Only 5 indians have won oscars, Bhanu Athaiya, Russell Pookutty, AR Rahaman, Gulzar & Satyjit Ray. Satyajit Ray received honorary award in 1991 and all others have worked in the movies made by foreign production houses Most of the Indian movies which are submitted for Oscars are of poor quality and if we have sent a good movie than we don’t publicise in the world market. In 1957, India for the first time sent a movie for Oscars, Mother India and it was also nominated in the final five, but couldn’t get the nod for the Best Foreign Picture. The next two movies which were nominated in the final five were Salam Bombay! (1988) and Lagaan (2001). It’s really surprising for a country which makes about 1500 movies, to fail so miserably in the Oscars
